Lord Ganesha is called by name Gajanana because of his face similar to that of elephant. Lord Ganesh has an elephant head, huge pot belly that has snake tied around it and he rides on a little rat. So, why does a Lord Ganesha look like this? There comes the interesting story.

One day Parvati was going for a bath. She told Nandi (The attendant) to stand guard of outside her door and not let anyone inside till she had finished her bath. When she started bathing, much to her dismay, Lord Shiva walked into her room. At having been seen Lord Shiva in this stage, her face turned into red with embarrassment and she was furious with Nandi for disobeying her order and allowing Lord Shiva to enter. Parvati informed Lord Shiva that she had instructed Nandi to guard at her door and not permit anyone to enter inside. Lord Shiva burst out laughing and explains to Parvati that Nandi could not have stopped him as he was the master of the house.

Goddess Parvati was very disappointed and decided that she would use all her powers and get a son all her own, who would obey only her.  Next day Parvati went for bath again and created Ganesha out of dirt of her body. She called him her son and gave him order to guard of the door and not to allow anybody inside.

In a little while Lord Shiva walked in, but he was stuck by the boy. The boy boldly said to Lord Shiva that no one may enter in until my mother finishes her bath. Lord Shiva asks the boy who is his mother was? Boy replied, Parvati. Lord Shiva burst into laugh and said, I am her husband and the master of this house, I do not require any one’s permission to enter my wife’s room. But the boy simply refuses let Lord Shiva to enter inside. Lord Shiva was extremely angry and severed the head of Lord Ganesha after a fight between the two.

On seeing engraved Parvati, Lord Shiva promised her, Ganesha will live again. Shiva ordered Nandi to bring the head of the first living creature found with its head facing north. Nandi found an elephant sleeping with head towards North. He cut of the head and brought it to the Lord Shiva. He puts the elephant head to the boy’s body and soon, the boy came to life.

It’s such an interesting story of Lord Ganesha.
